Coughing is usually an involuntary response to a toxin in your body. Coughing is a signal from your body that a foreign body or toxic element is entering. Coughs and sore throats are traditionally associated with an illness. However, all smokers are familiar with that pesky ‘smokers cough’’. I remember before I quit I had had a persistent cough for months if not years. At the time, I was smoking more than a pack a day and thought nothing of it. My cough even kept me awake at night, but nope this was still not enough to make me quit.
I experienced cold symptoms for about 6 months out of the year. Each year from October to March I would feel terrible. Originally, I thought that I was actually just unable to kick a persistent cold. But, each year of my smoking life was the same. Always sick. It was only when I quit that I was able to see what normal felt like.
It often felt like I was losing my voice. Living with a smokers cough is not a pleasant way to live. And, obviously when you are coughing all the time, your throat gets irritated. But, I always had the solution for a sore and it wasn’t bed rest or cough syrup. I’ll just smoke menthol cigarettes. I’m not kidding. My throat was raw from too many cigarettes. I would cough and wheeze and my solution was to smoke menthol cigarettes. What a crazy dependence. I must have been mad.
Smoking a cigarette on a summer day, you hear the ocean rolling in the background, you hear the birds chirping, and it is absolutely peaceful. Then you hear your neighbour coughing over and over again finally to cough up some brownish looking clump. Wow, what a disappointment.
Smoking is not natural; coughing is your body’s way of telling you that it wants to reject the substance from your body. Why not listen next time and put out that cigarette?
