Stretching and Exercising will Help you Forget Cigarettes

A healthy mind in a healthy body. That is a great saying, and a great ideal to shoot for. And believe me, stopping smoking cigarettes is a fantastic and major step to take into making this a reality. I do about 7 hours of strenuous physical activity a week, martial arts in my case. I can tell you from personal experience that two days after quitting smoking cigarettes, exercises that were killers before, when I was a smoker, had become merely gruelling, and the annoying stuff became pleasant! My point is not that you should take up martial arts – although everyone should – but that you will see great physical changes in your body and the way your react to exercise almost immediately after stopping smoking cigarettes.

It is important to take care of your body, but it is equally crucial to do so in a way that will clear your mind of those nasty tobacco cravings. Now the recipe I give you here is not foolproof, but it certainly helped me through the rough patches.

Stretch. Stretch your legs, your arms, your shoulders, your hips, rotate you knees and don’t neglect your elbows, the usual forgotten of the stretching routine. Take your time and go slowly, paying complete and utter attention to what your body is telling you. The goal here is to focus your mind on your body, not to hurt it and prevent you from stretching again.

Getting your body limber, if not in actual shape, will help you greatly on the road to stay tobacco free. After being atrophied by cigarette smoke for so long, every inch of your body will appreciate being allowed to stretch, in a manner that is respectful to your current limits. Although you may not be able to do a complete split on day one, or touch your toes with your fingers, you will appreciate the fact that being agile and limber will take the years of you like a rejuvenating potion!

Do you remember, when you were a kid, you could run around all day and never feel tired, only to fall asleep in blissful exhaustion when night fell? Do you remember the actual running – your legs pumping, your heart racing, all in perfect harmony? I know I do, and I feel its loss even more keenly because I know it did not have to be that way!

Most of the strength of your youth, your vigour and determination, endurance and stamina, is still there, locked away somewhere within your body. But unfortunately for you, as it was for me for so many years, layers upon filthy layers of cigarette smoke have dampened and muted your health, your joy at being alive and your enjoyment of your body, in all possible ways!

There is no soft way of saying this, no ambiguous yet understandable way of putting out this information than it the crudest possible terms: smoking leaves you breathless and out of shape, and it will (statistically speaking, of course) kill you dead.

In order to take action, you have to realize that the feeling of breathlessness you experience all the time now doesn’t have to be there. You can get your breath and shape back, almost overnight! All it requires is that you give up a completely useless, smelly and moreover, deadly habit that brings you no benefit whatsoever.

Imagine regaining the vigour and stamina of your youth! Nobody’s going to deny that you got older and that your body is not the same as it was. This is true. But imagine feeling your heart pump in your chest after exercise and enjoying the feeling, instead of wondering whether you’re about to have a heart attack! I speak from experience when I say that it is the greatest feeling in the world!

Don’t deny yourself the full enjoyment of the only body you’ll ever have, you can reclaim what is rightfully yours!

I have seen a man one hundred pounds overweight climb a flight of stairs quicker than a skinny woman. However, when it comes to smoking the effects to your fitness level and stamina are shocking. Even people who are normally active notice a huge increase in their energy levels and specifically to their sexual appetite and stamina after quitting smoking. Once you figure out how to quit smoking, you will find that your stamina is increased significantly.

Why does this happen? Well, the first reason is psychological: when you become a non-smoker you feel more attractive. Once you quit, you no longer carry around with you the smell of nicotine, evidence on your teeth, clothes and possessions, nor the smell of defeat at managing your life in a healthy way. Stamina is not merely a luxury, nor is it irrelevant for the average Joe. The benefits of increased stamina will be seen in your marriage, in your relationships with friends and family and will allow you to spend active time playing with your kids.

Stamina is also shown to increase after quitting smoking because your body is more able to sustain the effort required. Within the first couple hours of quitting, the oxygen levels in your body return to normal, within 72 hours your lung capacity returns to normal, and within a couple of weeks your circulation returns to normal among other physical effects that occur physically. It is obvious that when you are normal out of breath after minimal exertion that the desire will return.

Smoking Kills Your Motivation to get in Shape

Smoking cigarettes is for many smokers a self-fulfilling prophecy. You know that your smoking habit leaves you breathless and out of shape, and because it does, you have absolutely no motivation to get up from the couch, leave the ashtray and its nasty burning rubbish and start getting in shape.

The more you smoke, the more you are breathless, wheezing and easily tired. And the more you smoke, the less you have the motivation to move, and thus get rid of those symptoms. Unfortunately, smoking has more that a psychological on your health. It has a real physical impact, and while certain people will be able to perform sports while being smokers, they are performing far below their potential, and for most people, smoking cigarettes and playing sports are mutually exclusive propositions.

The effects of quitting smoking are immediately apparent in terms of physical performance. When I was a smoker, climbing three flights of stairs was exhausting and I would do anything to avoid it, even wait for the noisy and accident-prone elevator! Just a few days after quitting, I could climb those stairs without even thinking about it!

The point is that when you are physically exhausted at the mere thought of climbing a few flights of stairs, then imagining your participation in any sport, let alone one that involves cardiovascular effort, is dreadfully painful, if not impossible to contemplate!

I know that smoking cigarettes crush all hope, motivation and desire to get in shape. It’s like imagining that to be in shape, you have to be able to climb a twenty-foot ladder, but you don’t have the energy to even get your foot on the first rung! Taking that into consideration, it is difficult to see yourself at the top of the ladder, isn’t it?

Don’t get sucked in by the evil self-fulfilling prophecy of cigarette smoking. Break the circle, bust loose and you won’t believe what you’ll be able to accomplish in a short time!
