Once you have decided that quitting smoking is your long-term or near-term goal, then you have to consider ways to cut back on the number of cigarettes you smoke in a day, so that when the day comes to quit smoking completely, you will not go bonkers, but rather be used to going longer periods without smoking cigarettes.
One of the best methods for controlling the quantity of cigarettes you smoke in a given period is to cut down on the number of cigarettes that you smoke automatically, out of pure habit. You know what cigarettes those are! Those are the cigarettes that you smoke and not even notice. You smoke them purely out of habit and not out any sense of enjoyment. They may be the cigarettes you smoke in the middle of the night when you are woken by a nicotine craving, or perhaps the third cigarette you smoke on a short walk, after getting out of the car. Whichever they are, these cigarettes are really bad, as they are just as damageable to your overall well-being as all the other cigarettes you smoke over the course of a day, but you don’t even notice them.
There are several ways to cut down on the number of cigarettes you smoke automatically. The easiest one is to make your cigarettes hard to reach, so that you have to consciously think about getting them out and lighting them. You’ll still smoke, but my bet is that the number of cigarettes you smoke without even noticing will drop significantly. One very easy way to do that is to get a little case with a combination lock. Of course you’ll know the combination, but you’ll have to think about it every single time you want to smoke a cigarette, which will make you re-evaluate each and every cigarette you chose to smoke.
